Summer Workshop: Developing Your Birder’s Eye View

Mountain Area Land Trust (MALT) and Evergreen Audubon teamed up in August to host two bird identification and citizen science workshops, “Developing Your Birder’s Eye View.”  The summer workshops were the result of a grant that MALT received from the Cornell Land Trust Small Grant program, and a partnership with Evergreen Audubon and Colorado State University’s Master of Conservation Leadership.
Participants engaged with other birders of all levels to become familiar with the interactive “eBird” app and learn some of the tricks of the birding trade.  Workshops were held at Sacramento Creek Ranch and Pennsylvania Mountain Natural Area, two MALT-owned properties that provide unique habitat and offer great outdoor learning experiences. MALT’s goal is to develop a group of citizen scientist volunteers, to continue to monitor bird populations in the Park County area.  Ultimately this birding data will enhance the MALT’s conservation and management plans for its fee title properties, and will be used to encourage private landowners to develop these practices throughout this region and its six county service area.
